NYC SPUG ANNOUNCEMENTS

NYC SPUG Looking for Education Committee Chairman
The Education Committee Chairman will be responsible for providing SharePoint educational opportunities to the NYC SPUG community. Since this is a new Committee, the scope of the Education's Committee's activities is not yet defined. Therefore, the most important requirement for the Chairman is to have ideas and enthusiasm for this task.

Some of the program ideas that have been suggested so far are:

  • Arranging for NYC SPUG members to receive discounts on SharePoint training courses
  • Organizing a Vendor Showcase of training companies either during our regular NYC SPUG meeting or on a weekend
  • Arranging to receive free Microsoft Press books, etc. that can be raffled off at the meetings
  • Setting up a forum on the NYC SPUG website where NYC SPUG members can connect to share and/or barter expertise
  • Indentifying NYC SPUG members who are experts in various SharePoint areas (Search, BDC, etc.) that would be willing to maintain a page in their respective expertise on the NYC SPUG website. This page could provide lists of  resources (blogs, specific training classes, books, etc.) that will help members get up to speed on a particular SharePoint area quickly.

Survey Results
49 people have answered the survey so far. 47 of 49 people answered that they would like to see the  last 10 minutes of the meet and greet portion of the monthly meeting utilized for a moderated knowledge-sharing period with the group. One respondent added that "Q&A would be good if questions are submitted ahead of time and screened, and if time limit is stuck to" while another said "Yes, I'd really like to be able to ask questions of other members." A third person said "I recommend creating a discussion board to queue questions and if we have time during the last 10 minutes of the meet and greet to go over some of the questions in the discussion board."

Another very interesting comment was "I have spoken to a number of recruiters who are aware of the NYSPUG and would love to use it as a resource for finding qualified SharePoint resources.  The more professional of them however feel it would be poor etiquette to come to the meeting for just that purpose.  Perhaps you could implement some formal forum (a booth or specific time at the meeting) where available SPUG members and recruiters could connect." Sounds like a good idea given the present employment climate!

If you haven't taken the survey yet, please take a moment to do so. The information you provide is really very helpful!

February Meeting

Mark Miller of EndUserSharepoint.com showed us how to create dashboards within the limitations of the WSS web parts. With a basic WSS implementation, you don't have access to Excel Services, KPI web parts or any of the other features available to SharePoint Enterprise users so Mike concentrated on what is available in WSS and how those features can be used for creating useful, easy to read dashboards from existing SharePoint libraries and lists.
