SHAREPOINT DESIGNER WORKFLOW TUTORIAL
reviewed by Kathryn Birstein

One of the great enhancements of SharePoint 2007 is the upgrade of Front Page to SharePoint Designer 2007. Especially impressive is the included workflow wizard. Sure, it has some serious limitations, like it's inability to loop through the items of a list, but for complex approval workflows, it's just the ticket. However, if you've spent any time with the wizard, you've probably been frustrated by the lack of information about this great no-code tool.

The best and most detailed information that I've ever come across about how to use the workflow wizard is in a SharePoint Help and How-to article on Office Online:
Design a document review workflow solution

In a series of 14 videos, Stephen Howard shows you how to design a complex document review workflow plus how to create a workflow dashboard. It took me a day to watch all of these videos and some of them I had to watch two or three times to get all the details down but it was well worth the effort. The explanation of how to kick off secondary workflows related to the primary workflow is especially useful.

The videos also cover the concept of workflow lookups extensively (which are more complex that you would think), providing diagrams to explain the logic behing the lookups. My one gripe about this excellent tutorial is that the Visio Flow Chart used in the videos is not provided as a download. Having this Flow Chart in a printed form would make the complex videos MUCH easier to follow!
