Dear NYC SPUG Member, March 2009
APRIL MEETING - Wednesday, April 1st, 5:30 PM

SUBJECT
"Virtual Work Environment"

SPEAKER
Ron Simmons, Director of KM Integration, U.S. Marine Corps

The Virtual Work Environment (VWE) is a new workplace environment that revolutionizes how organizations think about work processes, extending business efficiencies beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar limitations of a corporation. If done correctly, this new approach creates better collaborative environments and enhances corporate knowledge management (KM) – all of which provides a real ROI (Return on Investment).

This presentation will outline the concepts of VWE including the technology foundations and discuss the logical steps to integrate these concepts within one’s organization. Ron will also provide some very compelling lessons-learned from the Federal Aviation Administration, US Marine Corps, and the State of Virginia.

Simmons is currently the Marine Corps’ Director of KM Integration, building Virtual Work Environments (VWE) which apply KM concepts and principles within military operations. Not only has this practice been migrated within various State-side locations but he personally guided the implementation of KM-Based VWE within Iraq operations during the summer of 2008.

Previous to the Marine Corps, Ron was the lead of the Knowledge Services Network (KSN) which was a KM-based environment within the Federal Aviation Administration. This environment started with 50 users and has grown to over 150 FAA Business Units, over 1,500 teams and over 40,000 users. Ron is a member of the eGov KM Advisory Board; member of the Telework Exchange Visionary Board, and Adjunct Professor at George Mason University, teaching a Masters class on "Technology in Learning Organizations (VWE)."
